What is your favorite music genre? You can’t say that you don’t have a favorite and that you love all equally, that’s just not true. Some love the sound of Bluegrass Gospel, others love Praise and Worship, others Contemporary Christian, many Christian Hip Hop and still others, Southern Gospel. It doesn’t really matter which is your favorite as long as the lyrics are pleasing to God! Amen?
May I suggest a noncombative position on “Christian Music?” Saying that a particular Christian music style is not Christian is like saying that only those preachers who preach the “hell fire and brimstone” messages are the only true preachers. I know that there are some people who would agree with that statement. In 1 Corinthians 12 says that there are many different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit, many different kinds of service but the same Lord, many different kind of workings but the same God works in all of them in all men. One part of the body to say that they just don’t belong to the body doesn’t mean it’s true, or to say that a particular part of the body doesn’t belong doesn’t make that true either. All work together for the glory of God.
How can you listen to Southern Gospel music and not appreciate and love the unique sound. Sometimes is difficult to distinguish Southern Gospel from Bluegrass Gospel and even Contemporary Christian. Back in the late 1970’s and the early 1980’s to listen to a group such as the Imperials was to listen to Contemporary Christian. Today most people would consider their sound Southern Gospel.
Southern Gospel music began back in the 1800’s. It began because people of the south wanted to express their personal faith in God. The southern states were going through difficult times (Civil War) and were looking for ways to rebuilt and reconcile. The people of the south had to come together and the ideal place to do this was at the local church houses. They would gather and in a short amount of time, songs were sung, many in the form of quartets; thus Southern Gospel was born.
As Southern Gospel entered the 20th Century, those involved in the industry were turning professional and traveling mostly through the south but expanding to other regions of the country as well. From the beginning, Southern Gospel performers considered themselves to be ministers of the gospel. Music was a means to share the Good News with others. The musicians could entertain and preach, considering what they do to be the greatest way to spread the gospel as well as to earn a living.
As the 20th Century rolled along, the Great Depression set in. The Southern Gospel professionals struggled, yet persevered. Out of the depression era came the Speer Family, the LaVerne Family, the Blackwood Brothers and the Chuck Wagon Gang (a cross between Bluegrass and Southern Gospel). The Chuck Wagon Gang is still performing today.
The 1940’s saw the emergence of individuals such as Jake Hess (John Daniel Quartet, Hess Brother Quartet, Sunny South Quartet, Melody Masters Quartet, Statesmen Quartet and the Imperials Quartet) and J.D. Sumner (Blackwood Brothers, Stamps Quartet, Masters V). Both men instrumental in leading Southern Gospel music to the level it is today.
If tough times brings out the best in us, Southern Gospel music is about to explode. The 21st Century is going through some turbulent times. God will use Southern Gospel music to help us mend and heal. Groups such as The Gaither’s, The Isaacs, Legacy Five, Karen Peck and New River as well as others and those who have not even started will be used by God to help bring us out of this tough situation. Praise be to God!

Is Bluegrass Christian?
I don’t believe there is anyone who would argue the fact that musical instruments are mentioned numerous times in the Bible nor would anyone deny the fact that David and others would dance on festive occasions. I come across many people who may not like a particular style of Christian music and make the comment, “that’s not Christian.” Whenever I hear this type of statement made the hairs on the back of my head begin to stand up and I must fight off the temptation to retort and even argue. Saying that a particular Christian music style is not Christian is like saying that only those preachers who preach the “hell fire and brimstone message are the only true preachers. I know that there are some people who would agree with that statement. In 1 Corinthians 12 says that there are many different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit, many different kinds of service but the same Lord, many different kind of workings but the same God works in all of them in all men. All work together for the glory of God.
With the above in mind, the focus of this article is to examine the most popular Christian music of the day taking a look at the origin, the history, the current status and those who make up the music.
Today’s focus will look at Christian Bluegrass. The earliest settlers of western North Carolina were of Scottish origin. They brought with them a wealth of musical tradition. The men would play and the women would sing the ballads that were handed down from their families. Most of the early ballads centered on either death or murder with the women singing in a high shrill vocal. The majority of these ballads originated in the British Isles. These ballads eventually became know as Bluegrass.
As the women delivered the vocals and the men played, the fiddle became a favorite instrument. The fiddle was an instrument brought to America by the Scot-Irish immigrants. Soon after the men began playing the banjo, an instrument brought to our country from West Africa. Shortly after the banjo, the guitar joined in along with the mandolin. Bluegrass was promoted throughout the region simply by family and friends gathering on the porches and in the living rooms of their homes. Bluegrass expanded to the schools, dances and other social gatherings. Radio came to the western North Carolina region in 1927 and featured much of the local talent.
Bluegrass music lingered in the mountains of western North Carolina for many years until the Monroe Brothers (Bill and Charlie) showed up. They came from Kentucky and brought with them there own style of Bluegrass. Bill’s voice was similar in style to the women who sang the ballads in the high shrill sound. In 1938 differences divided the Monroe Brothers and they went there separate way. In 1945 Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Chubby Wise, and Cedric Rainwater) appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and the rest is history. Bluegrass quickly caught on and people from all over the country, all walks of life have embraced the sound. The sound is now called Bluegrass Music. Bill Monroe is considered the founder and grandfather of modern Bluegrass Music.
The origin of Bluegrass music lies right in the middle of the Bible belt. The sound has evolved and today there are many great singers carrying on the sound. Ralph Stanley is one such musician that many Christian Bluegrass singers emulate. Jeff and Sheri Easter, the Lewis Family, the Chuck Wagon Gang are just a couple of the groups within the Bluegrass family. If you’ve never listened to Christian Bluegrass music before and would like to test the waters, may I suggest 16 Great Bluegrass Classics #1 for only $6.28. A sound bite of each song is available. This and a complete line of Christian Bluegrass are available at Emmaus Road Christian Store at very good prices.

Beauty Will Rise by Steven Curtis Chapman
Overview
Beauty Will Rise is a collection of 12 new and profound songs from Steven Curtis Chapman. Created in the past 18 months in the walk through the darkness of the loss of his daughter Maria, and while God continues to meet him there on the journey. Part lament, part praise, part grief, part hope, part wrestling, part pondering; these tracks resonate as Steven’s personal Psalms. It is a desperately hopeful, raw, personal, and honest recording that is likely the most important of his already incredible 20 plus year ministry.

Louie Giglio
Louie Giglio was born in 1958 and grew up in a Christian home in Atlanta, Georgia. One morning at 2:00 a.m., during his freshman year at Georgia State University in 1977, he decided to follow Christ instead of the party life. That conscious decision led him to become one of the architects of the modern worship style geared towards young people with its emphasis on informal attire, expressive worship and passionate, visually driven sermons.
After Giglio graduated from Georgia State University, he earned a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. After finishing seminary, Giglio and his wife Shelley began a weekly Bible study called Choice Ministries at Baylor University. After several years, over ten percent of the student body was attending the weekly study. He is currently working on a Doctor of Ministry at Grace Theological Seminary.
In 1995, the Giglios moved from their home in Waco, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia due to Louie's father's failing health. While flying from Texas to Georgia, Giglio prayed and asked God, what he had in store for his life at this point. He decided to start a national gathering of Christian college students; this evolved into the Passion movement and Passion Conferences. Desiring to reach across denomination and ministry lines, Louie began 7:22, a Bible study designed to reach and impact single adults in the metro Atlanta area. Functioning under the umbrella of the local church, 7:22 unites 3,000 singles weekly for worship and teaching.
The Passion Movement is based on Louie's life verse, Isaiah 26:8 - "Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts" (from the New International Version).
In January 1997, Passion hosted its first conference for college students, which lasted four days in Austin, Texas. Two thousand people attended.. This launched Passion to the public and it has been followed by conferences and tours yearly. The Passion conferences hosted in January 2005 and 2006 drew thousands of college students to Nashville. In 2000, Giglio and others formed Sixsteps Records, a record label for Christian worship artists. Sixsteps' list of signed artists includes David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall, ,Kristian Stanfill and Christy Nockels. It also releases live albums from the Passion conferences.
In 2007, over 22,000 students gathered in Atlanta, GA, where the missions focused on their "Do Something Now" campaign. This raised 1.5 million U.S. dollars for global ministries on six continents. Giglio and the Passion ministry held regional events around the US in late 2007 and early 2008, and then went to the nations of the world in 2008 with the Passion World Tour. Louie Giglio and Chris Tomlin also attended Jentezen Franklin's Forward Conference on July 2008.
On May 11, 2008, Chris Tomlin announced that he is leaving his church to start a new church in Atlanta, Georgia with Giglio.
Louie confirmed this rumor on The Passion Podcast on June 27, 2008. Passion City Church held its first service on February 15, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia at The Tabernacle.

Passion Talk/How Great Is Our God w/CDYour life is a miracle, and the creator of the universe knows you by name He’s big enough to breathe out stars, yet intricate enough o fashion together the trillions of cells that make up every fact of who you are. The God who spoke the universe into existence made you, too and knows everything about you. From the smallest molecule to the situation you find yourself in right now, He’s award of your circumstances and intimately acquainted with everything you do. And He cares about you and promises to carry you through. That’s where we find hope in the midst of the darkest places in life. The journey often complicated and painful, filled with confusion and chaos. Yet, the cross of Christ reveals God’s promise to preserve and restore you no matter what the circumstance. He will hold onto you and hold you together, giving strength to those who hope in His unfailing love.
Passion Talk/Hope w/CDLife isn’t easy. We experience problems and setbacks every day. But during the hardest parts of life, when the bottom seems to fall out, where do we turn for peace’ Although God doesn’t offer any easy solutions, He does offer Himself and His cross as an anchor of hope no matter what we face in life. And more than simply enduring suffering, the hope we find in Him allows us to leverage our darkest moments for His fame. When life hurts most, the world listens most intently to our message, allowing us to broadcast through our pain the goodness of the One who loves us the most.
Passion Talk/Fruitcake And Ice Cream w/CDFruitcake and Ice Cream: An Unlikely Collision of Friendship and Grace is the message heard by students around the world on the seventeen-city Passion World Tour. Sometimes the best things in life are those we're not even sure we're looking for at the time, but those we realize we can't live without in the end. That's the story of Ashley, a somewhat typical college senior--loving life, partying hard and trying to balance it all with success in the classroom. Disengaged from God and turned off by most Christians she knew, unexpected events turned Ashley's world upside down and brought a new roommate for her final semester at the University of Florida. Unpolished, and marked by unscripted authenticity, Ashley's personal journal entries provide the backdrop for Fruitcake and Ice Cream, a message that breathes hope for the spiritually searching while providing a massive kick-start for those within the Church who carry the unrivaled story of God's grace and truth in a darkened world.

Melissa Greene
Even for those who enjoy contemporary Christian music, most would not recognize the name Melissa Greene. If, on the other had you mention the group Avalon, everyone would be familiar. The fact is Melissa Greene was one of the singers with Avalon until the fall of 2008. She sang with them for approximately 7 years. Via a calling from God, Melissa resigned form the group, works as a Pastor of Music for a church in Nashville, TN and has recently released her newest album, “Next Step.” You can listen to sound clips of Next Step.
Melissa Greene’s new CD, Next Step, opens with a make you want to dance title track. With its speaker-thumping chorus and powerhouse vocals, indeed Greene isn’t shying away from an opportunity to show off the many weapons in her musical arsenal. “I’m so excited for people to really get to hear the real me,” enthuses Greene.
The book of Job tells us, “The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away,” and Greene was recently struck with a newfound comprehension of what Job must have gone through after he lost many of the blessings God had bestowed upon him. And this realization took place right around the time Greene was planning the Next Step project. This was a Lord gives/Lord takes period for Greene because, on the one hand, she was blessed with a promising new record contract; yet right around that same time, “my brother-in-law, who was 32 at the time, was diagnosed with stage-four cancer,” she adds. “I think every one of the songs I ended up choosing, and then later ended up writing, were all out of going through this struggle.” Sadly, Greene’s brother-in-law succumbed to cancer in September, 2007.
Yet on a more positive note, one of the clear messages Greene presents with this sincere new collection of songs is that God will help us take the next step — whatever that step may be — even when we feel too paralyzed with pain to move. Greene speaks to this miraculously encouraging characteristic of God through the song “Too Far”, which she helped write just before her brother-in-law passed away. “It was just the idea that God has brought me too far to let anything stop me now, no matter what that “anything” would be, and how little did I know that the “anything” would be facing the death of a loved one.” This song, filled with spiritual determination, also reveals an entirely different musical color for the singer/songwriter, primarily because it’s driven by a gritty, electric guitar groove. Its lyric reminds us to focus on what God whispers to our hearts, rather than let ourselves get overwhelmed by foreboding circumstances. “So I’ll keep moving forward, And I’ll keep listening to my heart, When it tells me, ‘Don’t you dare give up.’ ’Cause you will overcome,’” says the lyric.
Amazingly, Greene’s upbeat title track was written approximately two weeks after her brother-in-law passed on. With it, Greene creatively combines a deep spiritual truth with a fun musical backing. Its lyric paraphrases something one of her pastors, Mike Glenn, recently said; something that will always stay with her. “The test of discipleship was not about understanding God,” Greene recounts. “It was not about understanding His ways. It was not about understanding why He does what He does. It was about following Him. Jesus didn’t say to his disciples, “Get me.” He simply said, “Follow me.” And that was such a challenge to me – especially in that moment. Because I was sitting there trying to encourage my sister and encourage myself. ‘How are we going to make it past this?’ And I realized in that moment, and in listening to that message, that the pastor was saying, “All you have to do is get back up and take the next step with God. And He is right there to take that next step with you. You don’t have to figure out how you’re going to make it to the end of journey. You just have to take the step.””
Taking that next step, especially after struggling through an unexpected obstacle course filled with deep emotional landmines, ultimately depends upon trust — a mysterious spiritual trust. We must have the faith that, when we put one foot in front of the other, God will gently direct our feet onto solid ground. Greene summarizes such difficult forward motion, which often feels like large leaps of faith, on a ballad titled “To Trust You”
“The chorus simply says: “I can choose to ask why, I can choose to be angry, I can wrestle when life is not what I thought it would be, I can wish that all the pain would simply go away, But at the same time, I can choose to trust You,” Greene quotes.
When many of today’s popular artists sing about “steps,” these words are most likely about little more than dance steps. But when Greene pours her heart out over “steps” via the heartfelt songs filling out Next Step, her God-given phrases encourage movements that count both for now and for eternity. That’s because the Next Step all comes down to faith.

Matthew West
I met Matthew West about 4 years ago while in Nashville. He just received the news of the pregnancy of his wife with their first child. I found Matthew West to be very genuine and real. The songs he writes and sing about are very personal to him. He is a gifted by God singer. He is also a man who has had his personal struggles. Here is his story.
Life was good for Matthew West. Having catapulted onto the Christian music scene in 2003 with his debut single, “More”—the most played Christian AC song of 2004—the multi-Dove Award nominee and sought-after songwriter had enjoyed two critically-acclaimed studio recordings, Happy (2003) and History (2005); been a mainstay at Christian radio with memorable hits like “Only Grace,” “History” and “Next Thing You Know”; and toured with such artists as tobyMac, Jeremy Camp and BarlowGirl. But in April of 2007, with a new label home at Sparrow Records, concert dates on the books and plans to hit the studio with a fresh batch of songs for an album he’d already titled Something To Say, Matthew lost his voice.
After one look at his vocal chords, doctors at the Vanderbilt Voice Center immediately put all his plans on hold. They discovered a vascular polyp and hemorrhaged blood vessels on Matthew’s vocal chord, making it impossible for him to sing. His doctors were convinced only two courses of treatment would work: complete silence and surgery.
“Everything came to a screeching halt,” Matthew says of the diagnosis and the news of surgery. “All of a sudden my calendar was completely cleared. My studio plans were postponed. My life shut down.” Even worse, he says, was the frustration of not being able to communicate with his wife, Emily, and 1-year-old daughter, Lulu. “I was armed with a dry erase board, unable to do the little things we take for granted everyday, like talking with my wife, or singing to my little girl before bed.”
This season of silence wasn’t just a wake up call for the Wests, it was a dark, uncertain place. “I saw a side of Matthew that I had not yet really seen,” says Emily. “A more fearful side, vulnerable, less confident. But also, I saw in Matthew a determination to allow God to do a work in his life through this trial. I saw him commit time each day in prayer, and really seek God for some purpose to this season.”
Matthew recommitted himself to journaling his thoughts and prayers during his season of silence. “Solitude is an uncomfortable place, and silence is so unnatural for most of us,” he relates. “I found myself surrounded by questions like, ‘What if I can’t sing anymore? What if my voice doesn’t sound the same? What if I can’t provide for my family?’ It was foundation shattering. But over and over again, I felt this recurring message on my heart saying, ‘Cease striving…don’t even ask for answers, just be with Me. Be still. I am using your voice, even when you can’t hear it.’”
Most of the songs on Something to Say were written before Matthew’s surgery, but in many ways, it took this trial to fully understand their meaning. “Prior to this experience, I only had a glimpse of what these songs had to say, but having literally nothing to say for two months, it was as if I understood what these songs were trying to communicate all along. It’s like writing messages or taking notes and then taking the test to see if you really ‘get’ what you’ve written. Sometimes you’re given the message before you know what it means. Then the test comes, and you can see how God intended everything to be.”
Driven by a distinctive lyrical clarity, Something To Say is a soundtrack for life—a powerful reminder that God is speaking every day out of the broken places and pieces of our lives. Produced by Brown Bannister, Ed Cash and Chris Stevens, the album delivers the infectious guitar-driven pop that fans have come to expect from an artist and writer whose songs have also graced projects by Natalie Grant, Mandisa, Mark Schultz and Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as a cut on Rascal Flatts’ multi-platinum Feels Like Today.
From the high-energy title track, to the powerful “The Moment of Truth,” to the closing ballad “Stop The World,” Something To Say unfolds in fresh and thought-provoking ways to reveal its message of hope and healing. “I wanted to write songs that weren’t afraid to talk about real life,” Matthew says. “Real struggles. Real issues. Real problems. Because every song about real life is an opportunity to sing about the real Hope that can be found in Jesus.”
“Life Inside You” is an unforgettable example. Based on a true story, Matthew captures the struggles—and Hope—of a teenage couple facing pregnancy and addiction. “This young couple, with all the potential in the world, on the verge of throwing in the towel… somehow in the center of what seemed so hopeless, that tiny heart was beating… She kept the baby. It’s a boy. They got sober and got married. Redemption is real.”
The core message of the entire album, he says, is “no matter how many mistakes we’ve made or trials we’ve faced, it’s the brokenness of our lives that God uses to give us something to say to the world. I was sitting in church one Sunday after my surgery when my pastor read a quote from C.S. Lewis: ‘God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains; it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.’ It’s easier to cover up the weakest moments in life, hoping no one sees, but that’s not God’s plan for us. ‘Offer it up to Me, let Me show you what new life is like, what I can do with your mistakes.’ He will amplify His voice through you in a huge way.”
Ultimately, Matthew hopes to communicate the message that God is indeed at work in all our lives, in every circumstance, in every moment of our existence. And even in the silence—as Matthew well knows—there is still great Hope to be shared, a story to be told, and something to say.

Jeremy Camp
When you think of Jeremy Camp, the words "shy" and "quiet" don't come to mind. Energetic? Yes. Passionate? Definitely. Straightforward? Absolutely. Camp's thoughtful lyrics and booming voice have earned him legions of fans and accolades including 16 No. 1 songs, five Dove Awards, three ASCAP Songwriter of the Year wins and an American Music Award nomination. So why would someone so well known for his willingness to speak his mind and share his heart title his latest release Speaking Louder Than Before? After all, his message has always come through loud and clear.
Jeremy Camp is a renewed man, that's why. Over the course of four studio discs and one live album, this grown up pastor's kid has shared his life with us. Through his songs we've seen the joy and the sorrow, his devotion to God, his fear of falling short and his certainty that Jesus is the answer to life's toughest questions. Even when Jeremy's message became painfully persona when losing his first wife to cancer just months after their wedding, he boldly wore the mantle of comforter, soothing the pain of others by sharing his story, listening patiently to theirs, and providing them with songs that expressed what they were feeling when their grief left them unable to speak. It was that life-altering tragedy that inspired his early career.
Now, remarried with two young children and a new home base in Nashville, Camp feels like he's starting fresh. "It's so new because I'm in such a different place," he says. "I'm 30 years old now. I've been doing this for a while and so much has happened since it began. At this point, I have a more clear-cut purpose and vision of what I'm meant to do. I'm more purposeful in what I'm sharing." Being more purposeful is important now that time on the road can mean time away from his family. So Speaking Louder isn't so much about Camp turning up the volume as it is finding greater clarity in what God's called him to do. And while he continues to grow and mature as an artist and a man, it only makes sense that this rocker with a preacher's heart would use his platform to proclaim 'louder than ever' the message he knows today's kids need to hear.
Speaking Louder's songs will resonate with people of any age, but Camp's message this time around is directed squarely at youth. "I see the hurt, the lack of direction, in this new generation," the former youth leader says. "I always had a passion for youth, but this album is really aimed at them." He just planned on delivering that message from a different location. The Camp clan was planning to settle down in Jeremy's home state of Indiana, build a home, plant some roots. It seemed like the right time to take that next step. But as he was reading his Bible one day, Camp says he sensed God saying, "don't put your tent pegs in too deep here." Soon after, he felt directed to move to Nashville. Since relocating, he's found his place, encouraging other artists by sharing what he's learned. The Camps also found a spiritual home in a church just outside of Nashville. Adrienne is involved in the women's ministry and leads worship (drawing on her experience in the Christian band The Benjamin Gate), while Isabella, nearly four, and Arianne, two, were welcomed with open arms by a congregation completely unfazed by what their dad does for a living. The positive effects are visible to others, too. "My mom told me, 'you just seem more at peace and more settled than you ever have,'" Camp recounts.
It's a good thing life at home is calm, because Camp admits he's "the busiest I've ever been," balancing work and family life. It helps that the Camps have made a commitment not to be apart for more than a week at a time. "My priority is my family - the girls are at such a crucial age that I just want to pour into them even more - but I also know what I'm called to do. We tell the girls, 'dad's going out and sharing Jesus with people.'
"If life had gone just a little differently, Camp would probably be standing behind a pulpit instead of a microphone. But he spreads his message through music, anthemic songs with all the depth of a Sunday sermon. Sometimes waiting for that divine inspiration can be a little nerve-wracking, though. Camp was scheduled to start recording Speaking Louder Than Before in May 2008 with Grammy-winning producer Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Third Day, Rich Mullins). The album's first single, "There Will Be a Day," wasn't penned until April. Talk about cutting it close. "It wasn't because I wasn't prepared," Camp insists. "It was because I refused to force it." In the end, he replaced a several of the songs written earlier in the year with newer tunes that may draw some attention because of the urgency that he addresses.
"Some people might think I'm being preachy. I'm not angry; I'm not pointing a finger. Really, my heart is breaking. I'm talking about loving people and serving people." And it's not a message he necessarily believes everyone is called to deliver. "I'm telling my story," he clarifies. I'm pointing that finger at me." As he works to live out what he's teaching others, Camp admits it's a battle to stay on track. "If my heart's not breaking for the lost, I won't come across the way I need to." That realization keeps him on his face before God, turning to passages like Psalm 119, where's he's regularly reminded that he's not the one building this house. "I've given up on making this life my home," he says, adding, "I don't want to put my messy handprints all over this."
During pre-production, Camp was still bringing songs to Bannister, whose excitement was just the encouragement that was needed. Once in the studio, Camp recorded for five straight days, 12 hours each day, with some of Nashville's best session players backing him up and offering input that resulted in a larger sound than ever before. With its epic feel, haunting strings and plenty of ear candy, Louder goes far beyond any of Camp's previous projects, but the inspiration solidly remains the same.
The track "You Will Be There" is drawn directly from Psalm 139, while "I Know Who I Am" is based on Paul's impassioned speech in Romans 7 about doing the things he doesn't want to and failing to do what he knows he should (who can't relate to that?). Camp credits Bannister's "true heart and passion for what he's doing" with bringing out the best in him. "He knows how to get in my head and help me figure out how to get across what I want to." There's also the very personal song "Healing Hand of God," which serves as an epilogue of sorts to the story of Camp's loss of his first wife, a subject he needed encouragement to revisit. "I never want this to be just a story. It was my life, it was her life, and it was hard. But I still have people who come up to me every night who have lost someone, and God showed me that this is still part of His plan for me. It's a chapter of my life He still wants me share." But as the years have passed, he's been given a new perspective on his pain, singing now about finding rest in the shadow of His wing. The worshipful track "Surrender" serves as a fitting album closer.
Camp's calling isn't for the faint of heart. He knows he's to be the image of Christ to those he comes across, to show love and serve at all times. It's what he sings about and it's what he lives. "God called us to be the light of the world as we represent Him," he says emphatically, his conviction never wavering. "When you're speaking the truth, when you know what you believe, you speak loud." If that's the case, it's no wonder Camp goes through life with the volume turned all the way up.Jeremy Speaks Loudly About...Sharing the Gospel at his concerts: "Realizing that I have a platform to share with thousands of people, I always share the gospel every night, speaking the truth in love. I also know I need to be an example of Christ every day, too."
Love without truth: "Society today is all about love and no rules. We tiptoe around people, but if you love someone and never tell them the truth, their life will never be changed. When you speak the truth, that is love."
Talking to others about our faith: "God's Word is living and active and when you're experiencing God moving and living in your life, that will come out naturally when you're talking to somebody."
The role of the Bible in our lives: "The Bible is all we need, but there is a departure from the Word of God -- we're replacing it with other things."
His new campaign, Speak Up, Speak Now, Speak Loud: "It's an agenda without an agenda. The Speak Up comes from Paul saying, 'I didn't come to you with persuasive words, the Holy Spirit did the work.' It's not about what you can do on your own power. God just wants us to spend time with Him and have a willing heart. Speak Now comes from the urgency of the scary times we live in. Lastly, Speak Loud challenges us to hear loud this declaration from out across the nations where people are crying out. It's not about volume, it's about the substance behind what we're saying."
The teaching tools that accompany this album: For each song, Camp has created commentaries that feature him in a video song-by-song for the whole album. There are also music videos, and whether you've purchase a physical CD or download of Speaking Louder Than Before, you'll get access to these extras.

Point of Grace
This week’s Christian artist highlight is “Point of Grace.” The group originated in 1991 calling themselves “Say So” as a quartet forming at Ouachita Baptist University. The foursome traveled the country singing and self-promoting their group. The original group consisting of Shelly Breen, Denise Jones, Terry Jones and Heather Payne quickly caught the attention of Word Records and in 1993 they changed their name to “Point of Grace.” Since their inception they have been considered one of the top Christian recording groups. From 1993 to 2003 the group has had five Gold Albums (their fist being self titled, Point of Grace) and two Platinum Albums. At the close of 2003 Terry Jones left the group to be with her family. Leigh Cappillino was chosen as her replacement. In 2008 Heather Payne followed suite. She has yet to be replaced.
True talent really knows no boundaries; so it’s no surprise at all to those who have followed Point of Grace’s groundbreaking success in the gospel market that the gifted group has recently seen their audience expand to the country music arena with the poignant hit “How You Live (Turn Up the Music).” The beautiful ballad is the centerpiece of Point of Grace’s “How You Live Deluxe Edition,” featuring a newly recorded acoustic version of the multi-format hit.
“We couldn’t have planned it. It’s a natural progression for our music,” observes Point of Grace’s Shelley Breen of the group’s organic move onto the country charts. Though some artists might tweak their sound to appeal to a new audience, Point of Grace has simply continued to make the same positive, life-affirming music distinguished by soaring harmonies and compelling lyrics.
“What we’ve always been doing as Point of Grace, we are finding that country music is beginning to embrace even more, especially lyrically,” continues Breen. “Many of the lyrics you hear on country radio are so much more faith-based. There is definitely a place there now for the music that we’ve been singing for a long time.”
The readily identifiable sound has fueled one of the most successful careers in gospel music. Point of Grace has sold more than five million albums, won eight Dove Awards and received two Grammy nods. They’ve earned two platinum and five gold albums and have scored more than two dozen No. 1 hits at Christian radio, among them “Steady On,” “The Great Divide” and “Circle of Friends.”
Most recently, the talented trio has been busy in the studio recording three new songs to add to the deluxe edition of their award-winning “How You Live” project. The title track took home the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award for Country Recorded Song of the Year. They reprise that hit on the new collection as well as serve up two new tunes---“I Wish” and “King of the World.”
“The first time we heard ‘King of the World’ we all cried,” says Jones. “All three of us have incredible fathers and we’re thankful to have a song that pays tribute to them. There just aren’t a lot of songs out there that highlight the true importance of a father’s role in a girl’s life.”
Among the other new offerings on the Deluxe Edition is a song titled “I Wish”, produced by Nathan Chapman. Nathan’s career launched with his production of the triple platinum debut country album by Taylor Swift. The song was penned by Cindy Morgan, who also wrote “How You Live.” “We love her,” gushes Jones. “She’s very much where we are in life. She’s a mom with kids. She is able to put all the things that we feel in our hearts onto paper.”
Breen and Cappillino agree.“Up tempos are really hard to come by, we heard ‘I Wish’ and we all just fell in love with it,” says Cappillino, who began her career singing in a duo with Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town. “’I Wish’ is one of those songs that you can so relate to. It’s about the things in your heart that you yearn to see happen.”
The deluxe edition also includes a new acoustic rendition of “How You Live”. The groups’ signature harmonies take center stage as Breen, Jones, and Cappillino offer up a more intimate version of the thought-provoking hit. “It’s just a reminder to savor life and make the most of it,” says Cappillino. “It’s a great song with a great message and we’re just enjoying the fact that country music has embraced it.”
“The very first time we performed the new acoustic version was at the Grand Ole Opry,” adds Breen. “To stand on that stage and have those legendary players behind us was a night we’ll never forget.”
In addition to recording their new deluxe edition of “How You Live,” Point of Grace has also been in the studio working with producer Brown Bannister on an upcoming Christmas project that will combine songs from their two previous holiday collections—1999’s “A Christmas Story” and 2005’s “Winter Wonderland”—along with a new version of the classic “Tennessee Christmas.”“At first we were a bit daunted by it,” Breen says of the challenge in recording the Amy Grant hit.“She has been a huge musical influence in each of our lives, so we wanted to make her proud. It’s been 25 years since she first recorded it. Our version is true to the original, but it’s never been recorded as a group, so there will be a lot of harmonies.”
The same enthusiasm that led college friends to form a vocal group still permeates every performance today---even though the women of Point of Grace are now juggling their music career with the demands of marriage and motherhood. What keeps them doing it? “We’re trying to support our shopping habits,” says Breen as they all dissolve with laughter. “Being on the road gets in your blood and honestly at this point, it is about the music and encouraging people. This is what we do. We’re so lucky to love our jobs.”
They are also happy to be singing for old friends who’ve been fans for years and for the new fans they’ve made during this latest chapter of their career. “This is a new audience who might have never turned on a Christian radio station because they don’t know about it or they don’t have it in their area,” says Cappillino. “For us to be able to bring some hope in their life through our music, it’s just huge for us.”
“Above anything else, it’s very rejuvenating,” adds Breen. “When you’ve done what you do for 15 years, the great part is you get better at it. You get better at communicating with people, and get better on stage because of the amount of time you put into it. Normally when people are at their best, they’ve been doing it for so long, their audience size is shrinking and not as many people get to see the best of them. I’m just excited that a whole new audience will get to see us. We definitely will continue to make Christian records. It’s very important to us, but it’s a great thing that these new doors have opened to take our music to a wider audience. It’s a blessing to wake up every day and do what we get to do.”

The Tale of Tenth Avenue North By Mike Donehey
All right, if you want to get personal with Tenth Avenue North, There are some things you should know. First of all, Jeff is a cyborg. Half human, half robot, half Irish, half Asian. That's a whole lot of halves, but if you do the math you'll see it all adds up. We call him half-and-half for short. Jason can build things with his hands. Big things. Complicated things. Things like magic lockets, cars, houses, and babies. Not real babies, but ones that look real, and would probably look good on an old lady's porch next to the yard gnomes. My name is Mike, and I am a Native American. My Indian name is Squatting Moose, and according to ChaCha, I could beat Al Roker in a fight. Roker may have the power of the weather behind him, but I have the power of God!
And Scott, well...Scott can teleport.
We met in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida, almost a decade ago, at Palm Beach Atlantic College. And that was before it became a university, and before Tenth Avenue North was more than just a street name. That all changed though when Jason and I moved into some student housingoff of that street and named our band after it. That's where the magic happened after all, and we don't ever want to forget it.
Jeff came down to Florida from Indiana a few years later. He was new to the south and he even admits that he had a hard time fitting in at first. What with being part robot and all, can you really blame him? If you think humidity messes with your hair, you should see what it does to a central operating comprehensive mainframe! But after a few years, a few bands, and several member switch outs later, he came to be at home with himself and with the Florida weather, and eventually became the permanent electric guitarist and fixture for the band. And that all happened just two sweet years ago.
Scott materialized almost a year before that, and started playing with us through a common position at a local church called Christ Fellowship. He was a techie back then, but when a long time member left the band, Scott teleported in and has been laying down nasty sick grooves and rad piano parts ever since. At present, We're just trying to find our way in the Christian music industry"dodging traffic at the intersection of art, faith, and commerce,"as Jon Foreman once put it. We all come from church backgrounds and families, and therefore, are not satisfied saying the same old things in the same old ways. What we're hoping for with this music that we're making is to not just entertain people. I think it's safe to say that we already have plenty of that. What we're wanting is to see people encounter truth. Remember, we all worked at a church for some time, and there we saw plenty of emotion. We saw plenty of people having a good time, but it wasn't long until we realized that if emotion isn't being evoked by truth, well, then it just doesn't last. And we want this love in hearts to last. I guess you could say we're done just trying to get emotional from blast beatsand hip guitar lyrics. Instead, we desire to be cut to the heart. To be honest, genuine, and faithful to what we believe is truth. Nobody said it would be easy, but if easy isn't true, then who wants it?

Michael W. Smith
One of the most popular recording artists of all times is Michael W. Smith. He is considered to be one of the greatest praise and worship leaders of today. The information provided below has bee taken from his official web page. Who better to tell the story of Michael W. Smith other than Michael W. Smith?
Michael Whitaker Smith was born October 7, 1957 to Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia. A sister named Kim would follow. Michael was a typical boy - active in baseball, his family's church activities, and playing piano. But in not-so-typical fashion, he wrote his first song at age five. At the age of ten, he made a decision to give his life to Christ. He dreamed of playing professional baseball.
Michael attended college at Marshall University in West Virginia but after one semester dropped out to move to Nashville and pursue a career in music. (side note trivia: In 1992 Michael received an honorary Doctorate of Music degree from Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia.)
The years 1979-1981 are best written by Michael himself in his book It's Time To Be Bold. From chapter 1, we read:
While playing keyboards for the group Higher Ground, I signed my first songwriting contract with Paragon/Benson Publishing Company. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I was knocking down $200 a week to do something that I loved. Writing songs for a living meant that I didn't have to wait tables anymore, or work at Coca-Cola, or plant shrubs with a landscaping company.
I thought my life had peaked and God didn't have to do anything else for me. I wasn't looking for a record deal, a higher salary, or even a girlfriend - and especially not a wife. Writing music, I was as content as I'd ever been, and I labored at it sixteen hours a day. Then one afternoon while I was working in my office, Deborah Kay Davis walked by.
I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. When she passed by, it was all over for me. I was blown away. Totally head over heels in love. I frantically picked up the phone and called my mother in West Virginia.
"Mom, I can't believe it. You're not going to believe this, Mom. I just saw the girl I'm going to marry."
"What's her name?"
"I don't know, Mom. I haven't met her yet. But I gotta go. I'll find out and call you back."
My poor mother! She must have thought I'd lost my mind. But I'd never been so clearheaded in my life.
I left my office and went searching for this girl in the warehouse. Sherlock Holmes couldn't have done a better job of tracking her down, and eventually I found myself standing outside the ladies' restroom, waiting for her to emerge. She walked out. I introduced myself. We were engaged three and a half weeks later - and married four months after that!
In 1982, Michael was asked to play keyboards in a band that was backing up young artist Amy Grant. He also continued to write songs for himself.
The story goes that Amy's managers, Mike Blanton and Dan Harrell could not find a Christian record label that would sign Michael or a young New Yorker named Kathy Troccoli. Believing so much in these two young talents, they started Reunion Records.
Michael made his very first record in 1983 and it was called "Michael W. Smith Project." Michael wrote all the music and wife Debbie wrote the lyrics. The now famous song "Friends" debuted on this album. Michael continued to tour with Amy, now as her opening act.
From there - the records kept coming, and then the books as well:
1984 - the album "Michael W. Smith 2"
1985 - the video "Michael W. Smith Live in Concert"
1986 - the album "The Big Picture" and Michael's first book Old Enough to Know
1987 - the album "The Live Set" and the video "The Big Picture Tour"
1988 - the album "i 2 (EYE)"
1989 - the album "Christmas"
1990 - the album "Go West Young Man" which saw the song "Place in This World" hit the top 5 in pop charts, and helped earn him American Music Award's New Artist of the Year.
1992 - the album "Change Your World"
1993 - the album "The First Decade" (a best-of album) as well as a limited edition 2-cd boxed set entitled "The Wonder Years."
1995 - the album "I'll Lead You Home"
1997 - the book It's Time to Be Bold and the book Friends Are Friends Forever
1998 - the album "Live the Life" and the book Your Place In This World and at Christmas his second Christmas album "Christmastime"
1999 - the album "This Is Your Time," the book This Is Your Time, as well as a cookbook with his mom entitled Cooking with Smitty's Mom and a children's book co-authored with wife Debbie entitled Where's Whitney?
2000 - the album "Freedom"
2001 - the book I Will Be Your Friend and the album "Worship"
2002 - the book Worship, the book The Price of Freedom the vhs/dvd "Worship" and the album "Worship Again"
2003 - the CD box set "The Gospels Come to Life" (narration of the four gospels), a DVD "The Bigger Picture" and the album "The Second Decade" with a limited edition DVD
2004 - album "Healing Rain"
2006 - the movie and soundtrack "The Second Chance
2006 - the album "Stand"
2007 - the album "It's A Wonderful Christmas"
2008 - the album "A New Hallelujah"
In the midst of 18 albums and ten books as well as the awards (Dove awards and Grammy awards among them), Michael and Debbie were blessed with five children: Ryan, Whitney, Tyler, Emily and Anna.
In 1994, Michael founded a teen club called Rocketown in an effort to provide a place for teens to gather in a safe, loving environment. A warehouse in the Cool Springs area of Brentwood, TN was converted into a dance floor, rooms with pool tables and a coffeehouse. After three years, the club closed. The leadership continued to build a ministry devoted to kids, and a new site in downtown Nashville that reopened in 2003. Visit Rocketown at http://www.rcktwn.com/.
In 1996, Michael founded Rocketown Records with Reunion executive Don Donahue and launched their first artist, Chris Rice. Michael and Don shared a dream to be part of a label where great songs were the focus, where artists, not acts, were developed. They wanted a label that felt like a family. And what a family it is! Go to www.rocketownrecords.com to learn more!
In 1999, a prayer group of Michael and Debbie's that had been meeting at their farm, had blossomed into what they felt had become a church body. Gathering up some leadership, Michael and Debbie helped start New River Fellowship with close leadership by Pastor and mentor Don Finto, former senior pastor of Nashville's Belmont Church where Michael and Debbie had attended for many years. Visit New River Fellowship at http://www.newriverfellowship.com/.
Throughout his career, Michael has had the opportunity to sing for Presidents and national leaders, and counts among his friends the Reverend Billy Graham and his son, Franklin Graham. He is active in Billy Graham Crusades as well as The Samaritan's Purse, the ministry headed by Franklin Graham.
But for all of Michael's accolades, for his involvement in his teen outreach Rocketown, leadership in his local church body, the business of being an artist, an author and a record label executive, Michael sums up his life as this, "to be remembered as a God-fearing man who loved his wife and kids well.
